Pledges - 12/11/2011
From Coding For Kids
Below are pledges made during the barcamp at the Guardian on the 12th October 2011.
- [Andrew Yates] pledged to contact his old school to find out what if anything they were offering students in regards to coding. If nothing is available help set something up, an after school activity for example. Probably focussing on app development, although depends on infrastructure. Previously signed up to become a STEM Ambassador which others may want to look into, going to book onto the next induction.
- to write to every exam board & ask what they are going to do to validate coding
- to write to games companies to ask for names of their games creators so kids know
- to organise a coder's night at my school for all students to share their Scratch work
- I'm going to start my kids with either scratch or python
- to spend more time with my kids teaching them to code
- get company-sanctioned time to volunteer to run a programming club in my son's school
- to get involved with or start a coding club in London and hopefully learn to teach a little
- deliver a festival of inspiring workshops and activities for the Next-Gen and educate #codingforparents too
- Keep YOUSRC free - schools shouldn't have to pay for web-based tools like this in a web 2.0 world
- to create an engaging format for #codingforparents events and share the materials
- Ask to start a lunchtime coding club at the lower school at my school (pledge from an 18 yr old)
- I'm going to start my kids with either scratch or python
- I'm going to start my kid (and a niece, a nephew, and another) with something that isn't python (hate to say it but a terrible language that only a java coder could love), scratch (a nursery-cum-ghetto) or even "games" (Newsnight notwithstanding, games programmers are actually the modern day exploited code-monkeys of programming), but something real, relevant and useful even if they later decide it's not for them
- To blog about how to start to make structural changes to the schools infrastructure to encourage more greater tech awareness (Done!)
- I will help my 11 year old son (and me at the same time) learn Python. Plan to use "Snake Wrangling for Kids" as the first stage.
- Do community requirements capture for Starting A 'Computer_Club'. 2 help design simple guide 4 starting 'Computer Club's
- [Pixelh8] pledges to work with a "local" schools for a few hours every month to encourage creative use of technology which include coding.
- [Pixelh8] pledges to write up his experience of running a computing club with examples of code.
- I will run an after school Web Development club for yrs 4-6 at my local primary school and keep lessons and other info [here].
